Davis says he supports efforts for Flag Protection Amendment
TAYLORVILLE- Rodney Davis, Republican nominee for the 13th District in Congress, announced today, Flag Day, that he will support a proposed constitutional amendment to protect the flag from desecration.
H.J. Res. 13, introduced by Representative Jo Ann Emerson (R-MO), would give Congress the power to enact legislation to prohibit physical desecration of the flag. It is Co-sponsored by 87 members of the House, including a bipartisan coalition of five members of the Illinois delegation.
“Its important that we always remember what the flag stands for,” said Davis. “People have fought to defend that flag, they have been lost in battle. This country is an idea, and the flag stands for everything that idea is.”
Numerous groups support Emerson’s legislation, including the American Legion.
Flag Day has been observed since an Act of Congress in 1949. President Woodrow Wilson began proclaiming June 14 as Flag Day in 1916.
